UNMC & Nebraska Medicine Midtown Omaha Campus Statistics

4,216,727 Total Square Footage (as of fall 2023)

Founded in 1869 and chartered as the state’s first medical college in 1881, we became part of the University of Nebraska in 1902. Today, our education programs train more health professionals than any other institution in the state.

As Nebraska’s only public academic health sciences center, UNMC is committed to the education of a 21st century health care work force, to finding cures and treatments for devastating diseases, to providing the best care for patients, and to serving our state and its communities through award-winning outreach. UNMC also is committed to embracing the richness of diversity, and is a major economic engine for the state of Nebraska.

A Note about The Nebraska Medical Center

University Hospital and Clarkson Hospital merged in 1997. University Hospital left the University of Nebraska system to merge with Clarkson Hospital and become a separate organization governed by its own Board of Directors. It has developed into a strong and successful partnership. It is the teaching hospital for UNMC.

It was called Nebraska Health System from 1997 until 2001, when the name was changed to “The Nebraska Medical Center.”

In 2013, UNMC, the Nebraska Medical Center, UNMC Physicians, Bellevue Medical Center and Private Practice Physicians formed a new “clinical enterprise” that was named officially Nebraska Medicine in 2014. With one unified leadership structure, Nebraska Medicine was formed to position these entities to be the region’s leading health care system, to deliver the best health care for patients, and to continue to thrive during ongoing health care reform. The “University of Nebraska Medical Center” is part of the University of Nebraska system. Nebraska Medicine is not.
